Sunrise Gathering and Chant

Monday, April 14, 2008: 7:30-8:30am
Val Crabbe and Elsie Ryder both Hawaiian cultural practitioners from ALU LIKE, will be offering a traditional welcome and engaging us in short place-based activities for early risers. The gathering will take place April 14th, Monday morning at 7:30am by the small pool at the Diamond Head side of the Sheraton Hotel. All are welcome to join us as we start our PacRim conference experiencing the embrace of Hawaiian culture.

Traumatic Brain Injury Workshop

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008: 9:00 am – 11:15 am in the Oahu Room
Persons sustaining traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been receiving more attention due to the number of soldiers returning from the war arena with this type of injury. This session will examine local and national data about persons with TBI, provide information on projects that are further researching or demonstrating new services in our communities, and discuss what the future might hold in terms of new services. Emergency Preparedness and Persons with Disabilities

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008: 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm in the Oahu Room
NOAA, FEMA, and State and local governments continue to partner to improve response to rapidly breaking extreme hazard events, such as fires, flooding, severe storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis. With each extreme hazard event, new best practices are put into place by responding agencies. Protecting Students from Excessive and Improper Use of Restraint and Seclusion in Schools

Students with autism and other disabilities are being injured—and even killed—when schools use restraint and seclusion, rather than positive behavior supports. Parents, students and advocates are taking a multi-pronged approach to reduce the improper use of restraint and seclusion in schools. Pono: A Way of Life and Living—Native Hawaiian Practice & Application

The Hawaiian word “pono” means much more than goodness or righteousness. This session will focus on the traditional native Hawaiian understanding of pono and how it can be integrated and applied in our contemporary educational system. Based on Malcolm Naea Chun’s current work for the Ka Wana Series, we will journey together through discussion and activities on a pathway of discovery as to how pono can enhance teaching and learning.
